Many actors and stakeholders are involved in the nuclear waste management programme.
The Government decides
The final decision regarding the final deposit is made by the Swedish Government but the issue is of high concern locally and regionally.
The system suggested by the implementer is reviewed by the national authorities;
The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority reviews the applications according to the Swedish Nuclear Activity Act.
The Land and Environmental Court in Stockholm reviews the applications according to the Environmental Code.
Extensive cooperation
The municipality of Östhammar cooperates with the Uppsala Regional Council and the municipality of Oskarshamn. Our Reference Committee includes representatives from the Opinion Group for a Safe Final Deposit (OSS), The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC) as well as neighbouring municipalities; Norrtälje, Uppsala, Tierp, Älvkarleby and the Åland Islands.
The municipality of Östhammar’s review unit follows the EU-project Insotec closely and is part of the Stakeholder Reflection Group.
