Background

The municipality of Östhammar is contributing to finding a solution to the issue of nuclear waste – by allowing extensive investigations into the possibility of building a final repository for spent nuclear fuel in the Forsmark area.

Under Swedish law, the nuclear power industry must develop methods for disposing of Swedish nuclear waste. SKB (Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co.) owned by nuclear power companies, is driving this development work on a waste disposal method. The government will have the deciding vote on a final repository for spent nuclear fuel. The municipality concerned also has the opportunity to vote for or against the work.

An intensive investigation is underway. Politicians and the general public must have the knowledge they need to form an opinion on a final repository for spent nuclear fuel. SAFETY is a central issue in the investigation undertaken by the municipality of Östhammar into SKB's work.

The investigations in the areas in question for a final repository are in principle complete. Facts and analyses have been gathered in numerous inquiries and reports. These will now be reviewed. In some cases, the reviews will require special knowledge. The municipality of Östhammar is receiving help from university departments and highly trained experts.
